Act One Summary

In Act One, the Duke Orsino of Illyria has fallen deeply in love with the beautiful Olivia who has closed herself from anyone for seven long years, because she mourns the death of her brother. If anyone is to enter her home she puts on a mysterious veil and hides.

Meanwhile, Viola has just survived a harsh shipwreck but sadly she thinks that her brother hasn’t. A sailor tells her that he was last seen tied to a raft. Viola wonders if she will see her beloved brother again or if he maybe is in Elysium. She asks the sailor to dress her into a man so that she can find a job with more ease and becomes Cesario. Orsino accepts Cesario as a servant and sends her to tell Olivia of his love. Olivia does not love Orsino back but ironically falls in love with Cesario.

Other people love Olivia like Andrew Aguecheek a stupid, rich and drunken man or also Malvolio her servant. Sir Toby Belch and Maria make fun of Sir Andrew without him being aware of it. They use him to pay for draughts at the bar. This is the beginning of a very special, twisted story.
